Brief on Show #38:
Well just this last Monday was the official 70th birthday of modern Israel so I want to wish the land a happy birthday and many good returns for the next 70 years… Shalom.
Today is the day of Pentecost, this year being on May 20, 2018.
Pentecost took place 50 days after the Resurrection… or 10 days after His Ascension. Jesus had told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they would be endued by the Holy Spirit.
The word Pentecost in the Bible, in the Greek means 'fifty', or 'fiftieth' referring to the fiftieth day.
So what was it all about for the Christians?
It was a whole new beginning for the believers marked by a great event that took place on that day – it was the birth of ”the church” – not the Catholic or Protestant church or anything like that, but the church as “the body of believers” – both Jews and gentiles.
On that day there were 120 followers of Jesus Christ or Yeshua, waiting in the upper room as the Lord had told them. The number 120 is interesting.
In the Old Testament, God had called 12 tribes for His historical purpose. In the New testament the Lord called 12 apostles to be trained by Him for 3 years to be ‘fishers of men’.
12 x 10 = 120.
I’m reminded of something in the book of Deuteronomy where God said that one would chase 1000 and 2, 10,000 – not 2,000…but 10,000 – here’s that multiplier of 10 again. An interesting thought…Imagine what 120 would chase!
So what was Pentecost all about for the Jews of that time?
In the Old Testament it was the Jewish festival of ‘Shavuoth’ which still is today because it is part of the 4 Spring feasts that God had ordained as part of the 7 Jewish feasts -- or the Lord’s feasts -- that He told the Jewish people to keep for all their generations …
‘Shavuoth’ means the festival of “Weeks” in Hebrew. It was originally a harvest festival (declared in Exodus 23:16)
It was the last festival or feast, of the 4 Spring feasts that were celebrated just before the summer. There is no feasts during the summer until the Fall where there are 3 more to be celebrated according to the Lord’s commands from the Old Testament… all of them having a specific significance in the whole history of mankind and the Jewish people.
For this feast, they had to count seven weeks from the end of Passover, and on the 50th day they celebrated this festival of harvest.
So Jesus told His disciples to wait until they were endued by the Holy Spirit when he left– and Pentecost happened on the 50th day after His resurrection -- during the Jewish celebration of Shavuoth -- when the Holy Spirit was poured out upon his first followers…
We’ll look at that further, right after this…
